Florida’s Intoxilyzer 9000 – Coming Soon

Beginning in 2025, Florida is expected to replace all of the breath test instruments used for evidentiary testing with the Intoxilyzer 9000. The Intoxilyzer 8000 came into evidentiary use in Florida in 2006, more than 18 years ago. Over time, the machines began to break down, and parts became harder to obtain.

On February 15, 2024, Director Chad Brown gave an update on FDLE’s alcohol testing program at the Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission meeting. The announcement concerned Florida’s efforts to introduce the Intoxilyzer 9000, which is expected to come into evidentiary use in 2025. The Intoxilyzer 9000 is currently undergoing instrument testing. The breath test operator and agency inspector curricula are being developed. The division works internally with ITS and the vendor on the cloud-based breath test database.

According to FDLE Annual Regulatory Plan for Fiscal Year 2023 – 2024, notice of the development of rules were announced concerning the Intoxilyzer 9000.

PURPOSE AND EFFECT: Paragraph 11B-20.001(2)(a), F.A.C.: Incorporates the revised Instructor Certification Application, form CJSTC-71, to add Breath Test-9000 to the instructor certification categories, pursuant to the implementation of CMI, Inc., Intoxilyzer 9000.
